Mitten im Salento-Gebiet (der »Absatz« Italiens) findet man die Cantine Ionis in der kleinen Stadt Martina Franca, nahe Tarent. Das Weingut wurde 1970 von Giulio Palmisano gegründet und er verkaufte lange seine Trauben nur an große Kellereien. Die jungen Brüder Palmisano, Söhne von Giulio, leiten heute die Weinproduktion und haben das Weingut mit deren eigenen Abfüllungen zu einem der modernsten der Region gemacht. Vor allem die lokalen Rebsorten werden hier angebaut: Primitivo und Negroamaro sind die wichtigsten. Die Weine sind modern und fruchtbetont.

Dieser Primitivo di Manduria ist ein vollmundiger runder Wein, der in Barriques für zwölf Monate und nach der Füllung für weitere Monate auf der Flasche reift. Er ist rund und saftig am Gaumen, intensiv-würzig mit weichen Taninen und kräftigen Aromen von Kirschen und Pflaumen.
